Jim Benedix gives students the freedom to choose their own research, which has led to some very interesting work that he otherwise wouldn't have done. Recent research has led to a shift in his work from basic research to applied research – getting at an actual issue. He will spend a 2015-16 sabbatical in Maine researching forest ecology (climate change in forests) and squirrel behavior. His special interests also include negative effects of herbicides on tadpoles; evolution of parachuting behavior of frogs; communication between 3-4 different species of male frogs; and speciation in crickets (sound communication and odor communication).
