Documentary filmmaker Kristy Guevara-Flanagan will be on campus to introduce and screen her film “Wonder Women! The Untold Story of American Superheroines” after which she will conduct a Q & A. The event will be on Monday September 23 7:00 PM in Waston Forum PCCM. Free and open to the public.
The film speaks of the importance of Wonder Woman in popular culture (the comic books and later T.V.) as a model for young girls, as it also uses the image of Wonder Woman to build a narrative about the history of feminism in the U.S. Wonder Woman is made a lens through which shifts in the understanding of women’s roles in the culture can be measured. The range of interviewees—little girl devotees, feminist scholars, Gloria Steinem, actresses (Lynda Carter and others), Kathleen Hanna, immigrant moms, students, comic book creators (Trina Robbins and Gail Simone)--indicates the richness of Guevara-Flanagan’s exploration into superheroine icons and their impact.
